Selecting A Physician
Selecting a primary care physician (PCP) can be overwhelming; after all, your quality of life may depend on it. Here are a few tips from Scarsdale Medical Group that can make choosing easier:
- Contact trusted word-of-mouth resources: Ask for recommendations from close friends, relatives, or health professionals. You can even contact your local hospital’s Department of Medicine to ask for a list of doctors.
- Use the internet: You can learn a lot about a physician by typing his or her name into a search engine. Most doctors’ schooling, training, certifications and other background information are often made public. We provide this information for all our physicians on our website.

Checklist for Your First Visit
Even if you’ve researched a primary care provider’s background and qualifications, it is difficult to determine whether you will be comfortable discussing your personal medical concerns with him or her until you’ve had a face-to-face visit. See if you feel at ease talking about your health concerns. What other concerns should you cover during your first meeting?
- Does the PCP provide thorough explanations of diseases and clearly outline options for treatment, as well as noting any potential drug side effects?
- Is the PCP also a specialist, and if so, in what area(s)?
- How easily can you contact the doctor in an emergency?
- If you have an urgent medical need, is after-hours coverage – including weekends and holidays — available from a trusted “covering” doctor?
- Are other services and specialists available at the doctor’s office, or will you be sent to other facilities for consultations or tests?
