Endocrinology
Endocrinology is the subspecialty of Internal Medicine that focuses on the so-called ductless glands. Those are the adrenals, ovaries, pancreas, parathyroids, pituitary, testicles, and thyroid. Those endocrine glands make and secrete hormones which are chemicals that act at sites distant from where they are produced. Endocrinology also includes metabolic diseases, which affect the breakdown of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Diabetes Mellitus is one example. Metabolic bone disease includes osteoporosis, Paget’s disease of bone, and problems that result from calcium and vitamin D excess and deficiency.
Our endocrinologists work with two nutritionists and a certified diabetes educator in the management of diabetes and obesity. In addition to several weight loss programs, we also provide care for diabetics currently utilizing insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring support.
