Pulmonary & Critical Care
Pulmonary medicine is a
sub-specialty of internal medicine devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of
diseases of the lungs and respiratory system. Critical care medicine involves
management of very ill patients who are often in the intensive care unit of the
hospital.
Pulmonary symptoms can include shortness
of breath, chest pain, cough, snoring, sleep disorders, and wheezing. Pulmonary
diseases include but are not limited to asbestosis, asthma, bronchitis,
emphysema, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, pleurisy, pneumonia,
pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs), and tuberculosis. Critical care
medicine involves the medical management of very sick patients, often in an
intensive care unit setting, with multi-organ failure requiring aggressive
blood pressure and cardiac monitoring, pulmonary support, often with the use of
ventilators. It also includes the treatment of life-threatening blood stream
infections and severely low blood pressures.
