Rheumatology
Rheumatology is the subspecialty of Internal Medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions involving bones, joints, and muscles. However, some autoimmune disorders treated by rheumatologists can involve many other parts of the body. Recent advances in our understanding of immunity and inflammation have led to newer and more effective treatments for many rheumatic disorders. Some medications now used require intravenous infusion. For those patients who benefit from such medications the Scarsdale Medical Group has onsite infusion capability.
We often are asked what conditions are treated by rheumatologists. Among the more common conditions treated by rheumatologists are systemic lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, infectious arthritis, Lyme disease, osteoarthritis, scleroderma (systemic sclerosis), gout, tendinitis, bursitis, Sjogren’s syndrome (sicca syndrome), psoriatic arthritis, and fibromyalgia.
